Gold for St. Mary’s!
On the 11th of
March Ballinamona Equestrian Centre was the venue for the Hoofprints
Inter Schools Show Jumping League. With 18 teams scheduled to jump the
day commenced at 9:30 with the one team entered and this consisted of:
Ann-Marie Finn on “Jasper”
Claire Elmes on “Shane’s Gift”
Taragh O’Connor on “Sitting Bull”
Leoni Kirwan on “Curiosity”
St. Mary’s were team number
four to jump. Superb Jumping followed, which included three double
clear rounds and put St. Mary’s into the
Jump-off, along with St. Angela’s / Newtown and Gorey Community School.
Both had fences down in the Jump-off, and taking the pressure in their
stride both Taragh and Ann-Marie produced clear rounds to receive a
marvellous victory.
The winning team from St.
Mary’s were presented with their Trophy, Rugs and Rosettes and then led
the lap of Honour to great acclaim.
Special thanks to Mary Finn chef d'équipe.

O’Connor and Claire Elmes)
All
Ireland Inter-Schools Hunter Trials
Coolmeen, Ballyhale was the venue for the All Ireland Inter Schools
hunter trials, which took place on the 11th March and was
hosted by New Ross Vocational College.
There were three teams from
St. Mary’s entered in the Teams of Three Championship. The first team
consisted of:
Taragh O’Connor with “Sitting Bull”
Sínead McDonald with “Frodo”
Claire Elmes with “Shane’s Gift”
The girls picked up 80 faults
having had four unfortunate refusals.
The next team to jump for St
Mary’s were :Anne-Marie Finn with “Jasper”
Catriona Redmond with “Lucky Number”
Leoni Kirwan with “Curiosity”
They flew around the course
with ease and were just unlucky in knocking the last knockable on the
course thus incurring 10 points.
The last team to jump for the
school were: Amy Dillon with “Kilclammon Mist”
Áine Leacy with “Buddy”
Bridgette Doyle with “Pink Sparrow”
Here, unfortunately the team
had trouble as one of their riders parted from her horse at Fence 6. But
they finished the course with a total of 80 faults. Our team of
Anne-Marie, Catriona and Leoni were awarded 6th place out of
79 teams which was a brilliant result! Taragh, Sinead and Claire
finished in 28th place with team 45 following them in 29th
place.
Onto the senior individual
event where there were 7 competitors from St. Mary’s. Taragh O’Connor
rode the course without any difficulty thus ensuring a clear round with
a time of 5.46.
Bridgette Doyle took a tumble
at the very tricky tiger trap fence but rode the rest of the course
really well.
Áine Leacy had a really good
round and was just unfortunate in picking up 10 faults by knocking one
of the knockable fences.
Sinéad McDonald was very
unlucky in having a fall when her pony got a
fright at fence 7. Sinéad was back on her feet in no time and rode the
rest of the course with ease.
Anne-Marie Finn, who came
in the top ten in last years junior singles,
went at top speed around the course and galloped away with a clear round
and a time of 5.16.
Leoni Kirwan went really well
round the course and just knocked the last of the knockable fences.
Last to go for St. Mary’s was
Clare Elmes and had just one refusal but rode
the rest of the course without difficulty.
Out of 212 competitors two
riders from St. Mary’s finished in the top 20. These were Anne-Marie
Finn who got a brilliant 6th place and Taragh O’Connor who
came in a very credible 18th place.
The last event of the day,
which was the Junior Singles. Amy Dillon had a time of 6.00 and came in
a very well earned 42nd place out of 254 competitors!
Catriona Redmond, who was third in this event last year, was flying
through the course and was really unlucky in having a knockable fence
down.
Well done to all the Mercy
girls that competed. The freezing cold along with the hailstones was no
help either!!!
The team of Anne-Marie,
Catríona and Leoni along with Ann-Marie again for the individuals all
received their rosettes and there’s a bag of nuts to follow for each of
them. Well done girls!!!
Lastly, a big thank you to
Mr. McDonald who organised training and other things in the lead up to
the event and was the chief d'équipe for the day and also thanks to Ms.
Shannon who came down to support everyone and was a great help.
