CHRISTMAS 2009 NEWSLETTER

Principals Address:

God sent a present into the world, the gift of His loving presence named Jesus.  The Gospel stories show that what Jesus gave most to others was his personal presence, gifts that were treasures of the heart -belief in self, inner healing, peace of mind, compassion, forgiveness, dignity and justice.  This loving presence lives on in us and is the central focus of gift-giving.  When we see ourselves as a gift holding the goodness of Jesus, who is Emmanuel, God-with-us, it changes the way we relate to one another.

Advent, the season of Light, is an invitation to bring the light of Christ into our own lives and into the lives of others.  We can do this in simple ways - through the ways in which we welcome each other, and through the ways we recognise God made flesh in each human heart.

These are times when the need of Light and Hope is great.  People of all ages feel betrayed by the corruption and arrogance of power – in our politics, in our business and in our Church.  Many families are burdened by unemployment and financial pressures.  On top of financial worries many people approach this Christmas with a sense of being let down by those they had trusted.  Clearly in the midst of all this doom and gloom we have to find reasons to be hopeful and optimistic.  We have to approach the New Year with a sense of trust and optimism that God will bring us through these difficult times.

May Christmas be a season of peace and joy for you and your family!

New Ross Credit Union at St Mary’s Secondary School

St Mary’s, in association with New Ross Credit Union Ltd., runs a branch in the school, open every Tuesday from 1.20 – 1.50 p.m. in the Career Guidance Room.  The main aim of the School Credit Union is to encourage students to adopt a regular savings habit leading to a sound financial management practice for the future.  The school branch is run by the 6th year students Jo Bourke and Aoife Bowe under the supervision of Ms Tinnelly.  A Completed Application Form, along with an initial Deposit of €7 or more is all that is required to open an Account.  Each saver is issued with a Credit Union Account Book in their own name.  Subsequent Deposits of as little as €0.50 per week can be lodged in The Savings Account.  Dividends will be paid on Savings as applies to all members.

Withdrawals may be made in the Offices of New Ross Credit Union, 26 South Street, at any time, or from the School Branch by giving a minimum of one week’s notice.

Similarly lodgements can be made at the Offices of New Ross Credit Union at any time.

We would welcome your support for this initiative to encourage young people to take responsibility for their own savings and to reap the benefits of Credit Union Membership.

Stephanie Daraban is from Munic and is studying English and Economics in Passau.  Steffi lists Sleighing, Tennis, Badminton and Reading among her interests.

Both Judith and Steffi are working with the German Language Classes, providing individual Tuition to fifth and sixth year students, offering a unique opportunity to students preparing for their Leaving Cert. German Oral Exams.

Judith and Steffi have also contributed greatly in preparing a group of senior students for a German Language Debate organised by The German Teachers Association.  Other contributions included devising a Quiz on Germany for 6th year students on our Opening Evening, which proved to be great fun.  Plans are also underway to set up a German Language Club which will encourage students to speak German in an informal setting.  On a festive note the girls hope to show students how to make Traditional Christmas Decorations and Biscuits.

Students lending support to the Fairtrade campaign by Amy O’Brien –
published in New Ross Standard 25.12.09

As the recession continues, St Mary’s Secondary School students are aiming to get a fair deal for the third world as part of an ambitious Young Social Innovators project.

Fairtrade is the subject chosen by St Mary’s Secondary School Transition Year class 4:2 Entitled ‘It’s Only Fair’, the students hope to highlight the benefits of Fairtrade and raise awareness of the Fairtrade products that can be bought.

Not only do they hope to turn St Mary’s into a Fairtrade School but also to make New Ross a Fairtrade Town like neighbouring Wexford.

‘We really thought Fairtrade was worth looking into,’ said Claire Rowe, a student in the class.  ‘Fairtrade guarantees the best deal for the producer, and that’s only fair.’

The students would really appreciate the support of the people and businesses in New Ross to help them reach this goal.  They feel that, as the recession goes on, Rossonians should spare a thought for producers of raw materials such as coffee, tea, etc, in third world countries.

As the students explained, these producers have never had a decent wage or working conditions and cannot depend on their wage or plan ahead as the prices of their product fluctuate greatly.  While the average US citizen could buy a new computer with a month’s wages, the average Bangladeshi citizen would have to work for eight years just to afford one.

Fairtrade aims to give Third World producers a fair price for their produce.  They cut out all the middlemen and buy directly from the producer’s local co-operative.

Fairtrade products now available include flowers, teas, honey, hot chocolate, clothes, alcohol, jewellery, cosmetics and much more.

Any New Ross businesses that would like to support ‘It’s Only Fair’ or would like more information on Fairtrade Products can contact the class at 4.2.ysi.fair-trade@gmail.com.

  Soccer Star

Congratulations to Katie White (Adamstown) on her great success with the Leinster U15 Soccer Team.  Playing as a striker Katie finished the tournament as leading scorer, helping her team to win the Inter-provincial Competition.

Such was the impact Katie had during the Tournament she has now been called up for the Trails with the U15 International Squad.  The entire school community wishes Katie continued success, especially her 2nd year class mates in 2.4.

 Awards Ceremony

In our last newsletter celebrating students nominated to receive School Awards we inadvertently omitted to include Mairead Kennedy and Tara Kennedy, both from New Ross, who are always generous with their time and considerable musical talents as part of the School Orchestra.  Sorry girls!

 Operation Christmas Child

A number of Transition Year students recently took part in ‘Operation Christmas Child’ as part of their Bronze Gaisce Award Scheme.  The main students involved included Olivia McDonald, Niamh Murphy, Catriona Foley, Emily Daniels and Jane Slevin, who did trogan work over the past number of weeks.

The girl’s co-ordinated 2nd yr students, who worked in pairs, to collect items to include in their respective Christmas Boxes, ranging from toys, stationary to toiletry items.  These Christmas presents will be sent to deserving causes in Africa, Central Asia and Eastern Europe.

A big Thank You to all involved, including Ms Stafford, who oversaw the venture, all the 2nd year students who filled the boxes with a variety of goodies for less fortunate children from around the world, Businesses that donated items – Deegans of South Street and Mr Rogers of Bridge Street and to Mrs Charlotte Daniels and Mr Séan Slevin for driving the girls to Wexford to deliver all the presents.  Finally well done again to Olivia, Niamh, Catriona, Emily and Jane for their drive and initiative in following this venture through.

Sympathy

We extend our deepest sympathy to the family of Marguerite Brereton, The Rower, who died suddenly a little over a month ago.  Marguerite was a popular and highly regarded student of St Mary’s for the last 6 years and was honoured at every School Awards Ceremony.  Marguerite was very generous with her time and talents and was a respected Meitheal Leader to our current 2nd Year Students who appreciated her gentle nature and optimistic outlook on life.  A very talented artist and musician, Marguerite contributed to every aspect of school life.  Her fellow students paid their final respects to Marguerite by participating in the Music Ministry at her funeral and by granting her a Guard of Honour.

Religious Education

Open Night:      Sample student’s projects were on display and Ms Walpole, Mrs Howard and
Ms McKevitt were available to answer any Questions visitors might have had.

Retreats for the various Year Groups were a major part of the Term’s activities.  Transition Year, 3rd Year and 6th year students had their respective Retreats in Mount Sion, Waterford in October and December.

Mass in memory of all our loved ones who have died was held in the recently renovated Lantern Hall on Thursday 26th November at 1.00 p.m.

The Liturgy was prepared by the R.E. team and the Celebrant was Fr. Odhran Furlong.  The Folk Group provided beautiful music to mark this very special occasion, the first Mass to be celebrated in the Lantern Hall.

Many thanks to all concerned, the R.E. team, readers and musicians, Ms Tinnelly and Fr Furlong.  The Annual Carol Service will take place on Wednesday 16th December.

Night Classes – Autumn Term

Pilates, Bridge & Crochet, Adult Education Classes, are coming to a close for this Term.

Pilates Classes at both beginner and intermediate levels ran on Tuesday and Wednesday nights and proved to be very successful.  Pilates is a low impact exercise designed to strengthen abdominal and lower back muscles in order to support the lower back and help prevent back injuries.  It also aims to increase flexibility and general strength, and is suitable for all ages and those recovering from back complaints.  New classes will begin in January and Newcomers are welcome.

We were very lucky to have eighteen keen adults to take beginners class in Bridge this term, and such was their level of interest that they have decided to continue as a group in the New Year.

There is also another beginners group starting, also in the New Year with a number of spaces still available so get in touch with the school if you are interested in booking your place.

Crochet was also a great hit with the ladies who took part in what was a fun-filled group of participants.

We are always looking for new ideas for classes so if you have something to offer or a group who would like to take part in a particular class contact Mary Shannon through the school Office (421637) and we will do our best to get the class up and running.

Open Night

St Mary’s opened its doors to prospective students and their parents recently for our annual Open Night.  This event marks one of the most important occasions on the social calendar and affords pupils and staff the opportunity to showcase the school at its very best for our many visitors on the night.

Primary School pupils and their parents were warmly welcomed to the school on the night by Principal Gene O’Sullivan, while Deputy Principal Eva Duhig paid tribute to the educational link between St Mary’s and all the Primary Schools in the locality and gave an undertaking to continue this great tradition.  Head Girl Patricia Barnwell from Horeswood then addressed the Primary School pupils from the Student’s prospective and received a warm reception from her audience.  Exhibitions, displays and demonstrations formed just part of this very successful night, along with musical delights and theatrical performance, showcasing the many opportunities St Mary’s affords its pupils through its range of subjects and state of the art facilities.  A big thanks you to all pupils, teachers and ancillary staff for the huge community effort that made the night such a success.

Wexford Camogie Team – All-Ireland U.16 ‘B’ Champions 2009

Friday the 13th November marked a special Presentation Night at the Riverside Park Hotel in Enniscorthy for Wexford Camogie.  The National Camogie League Division 1 and Division 2 Winning Teams were presented with their medals by the President of the Camogie Association  Joan O’Flynn.

CHRISTMAS NEWSLETTER 2008

Opening of School Year Mass

The Mass to mark the beginning of a New School Year was celebrated on the 26th September, also honouring Mercy Day, which fell the previous Wednesday 24th September.  The theme of this year’s celebration was Celebrate life and embrace our future.  The Mass also introduced our New School Chaplin Fr Ódhrán Furlong.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to all of the students who took part in the Mass.  We sincerely thank all the Musicians and Choir Members who gave so generously of their time to make this such a special occasion.  The level of participation and commitment of all in preparing for the Mass was greatly appreciated, in particular the R.E. Teachers who prepared the Liturgy, Mrs Howard, Ms McKevitt and Ms Walpole.  The Teachers who organised the Music and beautiful singing included Ms Forde, Ms Tinnelly, Ms Barr, Mrs Grace, Mrs Reidy, Mrs Wallace and Ms. A. Murphy.  After the Ceremony the school leaders for 2008/09 – our Prefects and Meiteal Leaders – were presented to the school community, with each undertaking to promise to work to the best of their ability for the good of the school and its students.  In his closing address the Principal Mr Gene O’Sullivan again thanked all for participating in the Mass and looked forward with hope for the coming School Year.  He also thanked outgoing/retiring School Chaplin Fr Joseph McGrath P.P. for the warmth and compassion he brought to the position.

 Music Exam Success

Congratulations to Ellen O’Brien (1.4) who received the High Achiever’s Award for her Grade 2 Piano Exam with the Royal Irish Academy of Music and to Niamh Cullen (3.1) who was nominated for an Excellence Award for her Grade 4 Music Theatre Exam with the Leinster School of Music and Drams.

Congratulations to all those other students who achieved such high results in their instrumental exams and in their theory exams with the Royal Irish Academy of Music last May.  Their hard work certainly paid off in the end and this was reflected in the results.

We would like to take this opportunity to wish all the students who will be doing exams in a variety of instruments at Christmas the best of luck.  Congratulations to their teacher Mrs Siobhán Grace for all her hard work.

St Mary’s Junior Camogie Team on track for Leinster Semi Final

St Mary’s Junior Camogie team have started their bid for a place in Leinster. Following their All Ireland Junior ‘C’ win last year they now play in the Junior ‘B’ Competition.

Their first opponents this year were the girls from Borris Vocational School.  This was the team that beat St Mary’s in their Minor Leinster Final last May and they took to the field confident of a win.  However, St Mary’s were determined to reverse the scoring this time and won a keenly contested game by 2.5 to 1.7.

Bunclody gave St Mary’s a walk-over in the second round.  On Tuesday Presentation Kilkenny travelled to New Ross to take on the home side.  As St Mary’s Pitch was too wet to play on the match was played in Good Council College.

St Mary’s started the game well and sent the ball to their full forward line, where a free was won.  The referee, Michael Gannon, laid down his market and moved the ball to a more favourable position following unnecessary words from a Kilkenny player.  Katie Flynn pointed easily.  From the puck out Aisling O’Connor cleared the ball to Debbie O’Mahony.  Debbie quickly spotted Katie Flynn in a good position, passed the ball and Katie struck the first goal of the match.

It was not until the 9th minute that the Presentation girls moved the ball to their forward line and scored a point.  St Mary’s had sole possession for the next 9 minutes but failed to score.  On their second attach the Kilkenny girls found the net to level the game at 1-1 each.  3 minutes later a deceiving ball went inches under the crossbar to put Presentation ahead.  The last score of the first half came in the 22nd minute, a point from Eimear Murphy leaving the half time score St Mary’s 1-2, Presentation 2-1.

Trailing by 2 points and not playing to capability meant inspiring words at half time.  St Mary’s girls restarted the game with more conviction, better teamwork and spirit.  Mary Cummins had come on at corner forward and Katie Flynn had taken up position in goal.  Tara Kennedy was first to score in this half, a goal in the third minute.  Eimear Murphy added a point a minute later.  Mary Cummins then made her presence felt by scoring a goal, having received a long shot from centre fielder Aoife Lyng.  Mary repeated the effort and slammed home another goal one minute later.  A foul on Tara Kennedy gave Eimear Murphy a golden opportunity to strike a fine point.  Presentation then made their first serious attack on St Mary’s goal in this half but three super saves by Katie Flynn denied the Kilkenny girls a score.  Play continued without scores until the 20th minute, Patrice Lawler did some excellent work and sent the ball to Tara Kennedy who found the net.  Tara goaled again 2 minutes later.  Aoife Lyng who had starred at midfield throughout the 2nd half made a run through the centre to score a point.  On the 26th minute Aoife finished the scoring with a point.  Against the odds St Mary’s had won against a strong Kilkenny team, on a very impressive score line:  St Mary’s 6-6, Presentation 2-1.

We got a walkover from Presentation Dela Salle, Bagenalstown which means that we are through to the Leinster Final which takes place in Dr Cullen Park on Saturday 24th January 2009.  We will be either meeting Presentation Kilkenny or Borris Vocational College

St Mary’s Panel:  Maureen Dunne, Gemma Creane, Niamh Murphy, Pamela McCormack, Aishling O’Connor, Kay Mernagh, Áine O’Brien, Aoife Lyng, Sarah O’Neill, Patrice Lawlor, Debbie O’Mahony, Laura Hickey, Katie Flynn, Eimear Murphy, Tara Kennedy.  Subs: Mary Cummins for Maureen Dunne, Christine Lyng for Pamela McCormick, Louise Bennett for Sarah O’Neill, Geraldine Walsh for Áine O’Brien, Mairéad Kennedy for Kay Mernagh, Sarah Banville, Katie White, Fiona Moran, Gina Foley, Gemma Doran.

We wish to thank parents for collecting their daughters from after school training.

 Football News

Congratulations to the First Year Football team who successfully participated in the Leinster Development Blitz held in Carlow on Friday 21st October.  The team had a 100% success rate, winning all Four Games.  This is a very talented group of players and it is wonderful to see so many players attend training.

Well done also to our Junior Team who won their section of the Qualifying stages of the Leinster League.  The Team now play Coláiste Isogáin, Portarlington in the next round.  Well done girls, best of luck.

Volleyball

The Transition Year Coaching Programme has now been established for this year.  Sixteen students have been selected to participate in this Programme and will be involved in Coaching Volleyball at two local Primary Schools, St Joseph’s and The Rower.  We would like to thank both schools for their involvement in this venture.

 Equestrian Club News

Teams have represented the school in a number of show-jumping events this year including Barnadown, Wallslough, Warrington and Mullingar equestrian centres.  Our best day out was at Coilog Equestrian Centre in Kildare where both our teams were placed.  Our open team came 5th and included Claire Elmes, Ann-Marie Finn, Aine Shannon and Sinead Mc Donald.  We also had a novice team at this competition who were placed 6th consisting of Taragh O’Connor, Amy Dillon, Sinead Mc Donald and Ellen Fitzpatrick. It is great to see so many pupils competing for our school and well done to all concerned.

Training takes place on Tuesday nights at Mary Finn’s from seven to eight and from eight to nine.  Students can sign up for training on the equestrian notice board on a weekly basis.  We would like to extend our gratitude and appreciation to Mary Finn for hosting our training and helping the girls to prepare for competition. We would also like to thank parents who drive their daughters to all these events without whom none of this could happen. Some parents have also taken on the responsibility of Chef d’Equipe on occasions when I cannot be there so again I would like to thank them for this help.

Our members finally got their new school Equestrian jackets this year.  These were embroidered by Porters saddlery in Thomastown who did a fantastic job.  The Equestrian Club fund raised by bag packing in Tesco last spring when they raised close to €1,500 euro, with the parents council also giving us some money towards the cost.  It is fantastic to see students doing this kind of work for themselves. Well done to all who bag packed and thanks to all who contributed.

New members are always welcome, so come and talk to Mr. Mc Donald if you have an interest in all things equestrian.

 Design and Communication Graphics

The subject Technical Drawing has been updated and modernised and is now known as Design and Communication Graphics at Leaving Certificate Level.  Our current sixth years will be the first group to sit the new exam. Students are now assessed by completing a student assignment and sitting an exam in June. The assignment is worth 40% with the final exam making up the other 60%. The student assignment was issued in early November and must be completed by the first week in March.

Below are the details of the higher level student assignment which all our sixth years are working on currently,

Docking stations are becoming increasingly popular with young people who wish to share their music collection on their personal MP3 players with friends.

Many docking stations have features such as a charging facility, in-built speakers, independent volume control, etc.

The aim of the Student Council is to give students the opportunity to voice their opinions on how to make the school the best possible working environment for Teachers to teach and students to learn.

Each class has elected a class representative to act on their behalf at the Monthly Student Council meetings during the course of the school year.

The election of officers took place and the following students have taken the following positions:

Displays, Drama, Exhibitions, Demonstrations and a Musical Extravaganza were the order of the night and were very well received by our visitors.  The many young guides, who gave so freely of their time to show our many visitors what St Mary’s had to offer, themselves proved to be marvellous ambassadors for the school.  Again a big Thank You to all for such a great night.

Retirement Best Wishes

The whole school community extends warm best wishes for a bright and happy future to three highly regarded members of staff who are taking early retirement after long and distinguished teaching careers in St. Mary’s:

v     Mrs Maureen Carroll has been a member of the teaching staff of St. Mary’s since 1973 and is highly respected as a teacher of Accountancy, Business and Computers. Over the years she has been a Year Head, Assistant Principal and most recently Deputy Principal. Regarded as a great innovator, she was the driving force in ensuring St. Mary’s has I.T access in all classrooms. She leaves a rich legacy in school improvement as it is due to her efforts that we have been able to upgrade the Tennis Courts and refurbish a new dedicated Library and two Resource Rooms

v     Mrs. Mary O’ Connor has been a member of our teaching staff since 1979, first of all as a Home Economics teacher and for many years holding  the important role of Learning Support Teacher. It is in this latter role that she has made a real difference in supporting students with learning difficulties to achieve their potential. For many years, Mrs O’ Connor has taken responsibility for organising all our school examinations.

v     Mrs Marianne Ward has been a member of our teaching staff since 1981 occupying the post of Catechist. In this important position she will be fondly remembered for organising the beautiful school liturgies. As a highly respected teacher, Mrs Ward ensured that Religious Education was taught to the highest standard throughout the school and managed the introduction of Religious Education as a Junior Certificate Examination Subject. For many years Mrs. Ward organised internal school examinations & most recently, she has taken up responsibility for the School Library.

The loss to the school of three vastly experienced teachers is immense and they will be missed both professionally and personally. We wish each of them well for the future. We wish them peace, health and happiness to enjoy their retirement and hope that their future years will be filled with all the things they have looked forward to. We sincerely thank them for their loyal and dedicated service to Mercy Education in St. Mary’s

Jesus Christ Superstar

The latest joint Musicial production between Good Counsel College and St. Mary’s secondary school has proved to be a huge success, thanks in no small part to the students and staff from both schools who gave so freely of their time and talents to produce and present such a wonderful show. The sheer energy that surrounded the singing, the dance, the set, the fundraising, the props, the music and the huge preparation that has gone into our fourth joint production has been immense- resulting in the highly acclaimed Musical Jesus Christ Superstar. This follows on from previous musicals – Fiddler on the Roof, South Pacific and Honk

Musical Director Kevin Kennedy brought his knowledge, passion and enthusiasm to the show, raising the level of performance to new heights.

Snowflakes – No two are the same

The TY class of 4:2 in St. Mary’s Secondary school are currently working on a project for Young Social Innovators called Snowflakes- No two are the same. Our project is all about self esteem. Self image and self worth. We are promoting individuality and a healthy body image. We say whatever you are-tall, short, slim, curvy, blonde, red head or brunette it’s okay. Be what you are, because what you are is perfect. We are all snowflakes and no one else is like us – we are unique. For the past few months we have been working on our project in class by deciding what issue we wanted to deal with, talking about the chosen topic and consider ways in which we could tackle the issue, doing research and coming up with different ideas on how to get our message across. We did surveys with classes throughout the school as part of our research., body –image and self esteem, were central to our research.

On Thursday the 31st January a snowflake day was held to promote individuality and healthy body images, talking about any self-esteem problems people may have, to raise money for Mental Health Ireland, make people feel better about themselves and to just have fun. Throughout the week in religion class, each class also did a “compliment sheet” for each other, which they received in our snowflake pack. Each pack included a brochure about our project, a poem “I celebrate me” which is all about encouraging people’s uniqueness, having good self-esteem and boosting self worth. Also in the packs were some white bonbons and a compliment sheet, which we’ll explain. What you do is each student writes a compliment about you before passing it onto the next person. It goes on and on like this until everyone in the class has a page full of compliments. It’s a lovely thing to have if you’re every feeling down to take this page out and look at all the lovely things people think about you.

A speaker from Mental Health Ireland, Joan Power, Development Officer, South East, came to speak to our TY class about the issue of teenage mental health. This ties in with our project because many mental health issues are a result of low self-esteem, low or no self-worth and many eating disorders which are a mental illness are caused by poor self-image.

The whole school was invited to join-in in our socks and slippers day to raise money for charity. On Thursday we asked that everyone – staff included! Bring in socks and slippers to wear. In first class everyone changed into their funny socks and slippers and spent the day in comfort before changing back before the end of the last class. Each person who took part donated €2 when members of 4:2 came around to the different classes. Your help and encouragement was greatly appreciated. An additional fundraiser included selling snowflake badges for €1. wearing the badge was a way of showing that you are unique and proud of it!! While helping charities too. We would like to thank the Community Workshop for making the badges and all our teachers and the office staff who helped us in getting the packs together and for letting us decorate the school. Also like to thank our speaker Joan Power,  from Mental Health Ireland for coming to speak to us, Sean Connick’s office for supplying us with some decorations, the Cash n’Carry for the bonbons and Barrow Office Supplies for the envelopes and paper for the packs.

We thank you all for your support and help with our project.

 Retirement Best Wishes:

The whole school community extends warm best wishes for a bright and happy future to Ms. Kathleen Doyle who has taken early retirement after a long and distinguished teaching career in St. Mary’s Ms. Doyle has been a highly respected and valued member of the teaching staff since 1974 and is known to countless generations of students as a warm and committed teacher of French and History. For many years she has been an Assistant Principal and Year Head and is regarded by one and all as a very kind and fair teacher. We wish her well for the future and sincerely thank her for her dedicated service in St. Mary’s

Student Attendance:

It is great help to us when Parents phone the school office before 9 to let us know if their daughter will be absent form school that day. Please try to remember to do this. The usual note explaining absence will still be required when your daughter returns to school in order to meet our statutory obligations under the Education Welfare Board. We are very thankful for the prompt replies we receive in response to text messages sent home.

By the co-operation between home and school we ensure that each girl in our care is safe and accounted for.

 Can You Help?

As a school we are committed to providing the widest range of educational experiences to our students. Frequently this involves taking girls our of school. Good practice demands that two adults accompany any group of students. However, this poses great difficulty when two teachers have to leave their usual classes in order to go out of school with a group involved in a specific activity due to the unavailability of qualified substitute teachers.

We are hoping that parents with a little free time would agree to joining a panel of volunteers that we could call on from time to time to accompany a teacher on an outing from school. We understand that you would not be available on all occasions but perhaps you would be some of the time. If we have a panel we have a good chance of finding someone who could help.

 Library

We would like to thank most sincerely the Transition Year Group for their generous donation to the library. From the sale of their magazine “The Open Door”  a sum of €92 was presented to the library. Many thanks to the students involved and their teacher’s  Mr. Deavy, Ms Fennelly & Ms Anne Doyle

newsletter Christmas 2006

Friendship Festival  St. Mary’s Friendship Week is an annual event that celebrates the joys of friendship while promoting good spirit and new friendships in the school. First run in 2002, it is celebrated the week after midterm break. Each year a theme is selected and then presented in artwork, drama, competitions, activities and music throughout the week. Volunteers are invited from every year and are led by the school Prefects, supported by school staff, in producing the year’s events. This year the organising committee included 1st, 2nd, TY, 5th, and 6th year students who did wonderful work for the school while having plenty fun doing it.

This year our theme is "Connections". Artwork and activities were developed using Dominoes to illustrate that we are all connected in some way. In PE this week all students took part in group challenges and activities that require good teamwork. Other events were happening during break times throughout the school. A new event this year, and one of the highlights was the "Connect 4 Championships" organised by the Prefects. We saw the return of annual favourites including the "Friendship Quiz" organised by 5th year students and the "Blindfold Obstacle Course" organised by 1st years. The school airways were filled once again with "Friendship FM" broadcasting over the school intercom at lunchtime and for the first time this year we had a breakfast show. TY students both presented and helped 1st year students to prepare shows.

Our lasting memories from this year will be the art work made from Dominoes, organised by the 2nd years, which is proudly displayed in school, the "Kind Words" and of course the lollipops!! Our thanks to everyone who took part in the week, without you it could not have been a success.

Mini Company 2006

Careers World Once again this year, juniors in the school are taking part in the Celtic Enterprises mini-company challenge. Students are setting up their own businesses providing goods and services and are hoping to make a profit along the way. The students have been busy setting up their companies since September – they came up with ideas for products, carried out market research, made product samples, undertaken various marketing activities and showcased their work at our recent open night. There is a great buzz around the mini-companies and the girls are gaining great insight into the world of business through their involvement in the project. Many hours of hard work have gone into making a success of their companies and all this work is done outside school hours. Well done to all involved. There will be a school market day on December 18th where you will be able to come along and visit the girls at their stands and pick up some Christmas gifts.

Readathon/Irish Multiple Sclerosis Society  Students from 1st year have been very busy for the past number of weeks, reading books to raise funds for the Irish Multiple Sclerosis Society. As a result of their great effort a total of €904.20 was raised for this very worthy cause. This was a splendid and very commendable achievement. Well done to all concerned. The event was co-ordinated by Mrs. Kennedy along with the 1st year English teachers, Mrs. Larkin and Ms Fennelly and Mr. Deavy.

Music Workshop   The Junior and Senior Choir recently attended a Choral Workshop in the Helix, Dublin on Friday 17th November. The Renowned Choral Conductor Peter Hunt presented the Workshop. Over seven Hundred students from around the Country attended the event and the Workshop added a new dimension to the students Choral Work. Ms Corbett and Ms Shannon accompanied the group

Junior Football Victory The Junior Football team continued with their recent success with another great victory, on this occasion beating Ramsgrange Community School. This win ensures the Junior team has progressed to the play-off stages of the competition, after finishing top of their group. The Match was played in appalling weather conditions in Ramsgrange. The team played with the advantage of a strong wind in the first half, building up a commanding lead, which Ramsgrange were unable to claw back. Our opponents in the next stage of the Competition are not yet known, well done to the Team and in particular to Leanne Murphy and Avril Mullery for all their hard work and dedication.

New Times for Detention for 2007

Detention will take place from 3.15 – 5.00 pm on a named Friday. Parents of students placed on Detention are required to take their daughter home at 5.00 pm. Detention results from the loss of 10 merits following infringements of our Code of Conduct.

We must emphasize that it is a serious matter to be placed on Detention and no Parent or Student should take it lightly. Parents of students placed on detention are asked to undertake to speak with their daughter about her conduct with a view to ensuring that from now on her behaviour will not result in valuable teaching and learning time being wasted. Our hope is that each student will be a source of good example to her fellow students. We celebrate any student who turns over a new leaf and makes a fresh start.

We trust that we can rely on the full cooperation of each and every Parent in this matter.

Credit Union The Credit Union in the school reopened for business in November. The School Credit Union is run under the auspices of New Ross Credit Union. The main aim of the School Credit Union is to encourage Students to adopt a regular savings habit and thereby to sow the seeds of good financial management for the future. The School Credit Union is being run by three 6th year students; Melanie Cleary, Caroline Foley, Suzanne Phelan and by three 5th year students; Sinead Furlong, Fadzai Healy Magwa and Margaret Ann Kehoe. Their teacher Ms Colette Tinnelly assists the students in their role.

The Credit Union opens each Thursday in the Career Guidance room at 1.30 p.m. Students will be issued with Credit Union Account Books in their own names. A minimum of €7 is required to open the Account. Students may then save any amount per week from 50 cent upwards. During times when the Credit Union is not operating in school (e.g. holiday times) withdrawals and lodgements may be made in the offices of New Ross Credit Union in South Street.

We would like to thank our students for volunteering to run the Credit Union and a big thank you to Ms Aideen Doyle from New Ross Credit Union for all her support.

LEAVING CERTIFICATE EXCELLENCE

St. Mary’s Students among top 3% Achievers at Trinity College

The Provost of Trinity College recently honoured three of our students and their parents at a reception in Trinity College. These girls were singled out, not for merely securing a place in this prestigious university but for being among the top students in their classes based on their Leaving Certificate Results. The Provost presented Entrance Awards to:

Therese Grace, daughter of Eileen and Sean, from Ballyanne

Saoirse Kennedy, daughter of Janet and Denis, from Tullogher

Caroline Walsh, daughter of Ann and Dermot, from The Rower.

We extend sincere congratulations to these girls and their families on such a great achievement.

UCD 150th Scholarship Award

To mark the 150th Anniversary of the foundation of University College Dublin the college awards a number of special scholarships. We are delighted that Emma Murphy was honoured by the UCD and awarded one of their 150th Scholarships. In a very dignified ceremony Emma was presented with her award in the presence of her justifiably proud mother, Mary from Irishtown Heights. This is a tremendous achievement and a great source of encouragement to other students.

Easter Week 1916 Commemoration Scholarships

Imagine the excitement when an Assistant to Minister for Education and Science, Mrs

Mary Hannifin phoned the school to say that the Minister wished to speak to one of our students. Minister Hannifin wanted to congratulate personally Therese Grace from Ballyanne on being awarded one of the Easter Week 1916 Commemoration Scholarships for obtaining the highest results in the whole country in English, Irish and Accountancy.

In commemoration of each of the signatories of the 1916 Proclamation of Independence, the Minister for Education and Science awards seven third level scholarships to the students who obtain the highest result in particular groups of subjects in the Leaving Certificate. True to her word Minister Hannifin phoned Therese, who is a student of Business, Economics and Social Studies (BESS) in Trinity College and invited her to a special presentation in Marlborough House next January. She emphasised the wonderful achievement it is to obtain the highest results in Ireland in the combination of English, Irish and Accountancy. We are extremely blessed in the calibre of our teachers and Mr. Paul Deavy, Ms. Brid Fogarty and Ms. Colette Tinnelly are to be congratulated for their crucial roles in enabling Therese achieve her potential. Of course the last word has to go to Therese and to congratulate her and her parents, Sean and Eileen, on achieving such academic excellence.

During their stay they had to walk approx. 24 kms. The weather was very wet on the Friday but it didn’t dampen their spirits. They participated with good humour in the walk and guided tour of the monastic site. On Friday night the girls put on a very entertaining "concert". There are many walks in this beautiful area and on Saturday our walk gave us a view across the lake of the reputed bed of St.Kevin.

Trip to Dublin – 14th Nov

The Transition Years visited the National Concert Hall, Dublin for a "Music in the Classroom" performance by the National Concert Orchestra under the baton of Gearóid Grant. Work Experience – Nov 20th to Dec 1st The Transition Years students have recently returned from their work experience placement having had a "taste" of a variety of careers, ranging from laboratory work, horse training, veterinary work to primary school. Each girl got an insight into possible career paths through this very worthwhile venture.

Soroptimists Public Speaking Competition 11 of the Transition Year girls decided to enter the Soroptimists public speaking competition this year to represent the Wexford, Kilkenny and Tipperary region. As there were so many entries to the competition only 4 students per school were allowed to compete on the night. An in-school competition was held one night during work experience, which was graciously adjudicated, by Mrs. Geraldine Larkin and Mrs. Eva Kelly. Only 4 students could be chosen, these were Taragh O’ Connor, Caoimhe Doyle, Leanne Rowe and Jennifer Phelan. These girls represented the school very well at the competition but unfortunately were not among the two to qualify from the region. Congratulations to all the girls who participated.

An Advent wreath is lighting in the Religion Room during this season.

It is a tough day and we are very thankful to all 3rd year students for their co-operation, hard work and good humour during the day. Over the coming weeks during class time the courses and options available will be explained to all students. In January each student will have an individual meeting with a Guidance Counsellor to discuss their choices and the results of their DATs and the Career Interest Inventory done on the test day.

For parents of 3rd year students an information night to present and discuss Course/Subject Options was held on Wednesday, 13th December, at 8pm.

1st year Guidance News Thanks to the 1st year students for their recent letters to Mr O’ Sullivan. Thank you for the thought and effort that went into them and for the comments and suggestions you made.

Green School news
T
his year is a big year for Greenschool in St. Mary’s as we compete to retain our Greenschool Flag for the third time. In 2004 our project was on Energy, in 2002 our project was on Water and in 2000 our project was on Litter. This year our challenge is to revise and develop all three previous projects to retain the Green Flag award. A big thank you to all students and staff who volunteered their time and creativity to undertake the challenge. This year Greenschool Committee has almost 100 members divided into 3 project groups.

Already this year Greenschool members have been raising awareness about environmental issues through the Friendship week – Hug a tree, and through Open night activities including Mother Earth, Deal or no Deal, and the Recycling Bin Challenge. As part of our "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" campaign St Mary’s, in conjunction with Mercy Waterford, recently sent a consignment of old schoolbooks to Liberia. Many thanks to the 3rd years who did the packing.

ESB Power Cut
The planned power cut that necessitated early school closure on Tuesday 12th November had not been notified to the school by the ESB. The Board of Management regrets the inconvenience this caused to so many families which was totally unavoidable. This matter is being formally addressed with the ESB.

September 2005 Newsletter

To: Parents & Students

Welcome Back

How quickly the summer goes! Welcome back to all our students and a special welcome to St. Mary’s to all our new students in 1st year and their parents and those new students joining us in other year groups. We hope that the year ahead will be a good and enjoyable year and that all our students will do their very best in all classes.

Staff Retirements

Best wishes for health and happiness are extended to Mrs Bernadine Dimond, Mrs Maura Grennan and Mrs Eva Kelly who have retired from teaching.

Mrs. Dimond has been on the teaching staff since 1971 and over the years has taught all of the science subjects, Chemistry, Physics, Biology as well as Maths & Technical Graphics. For many years she has also worked with many Principals on the construction of the School Timetable.

Mrs. Grennan joined St. Marys in 1973 and was best known as a teacher of English & History. In recent years she was a Year Head.

Mrs. Kelly joined the teaching staff in 1989 and prior to that had worked in the VEC. She was a well known English teacher & encouraged may students in public speaking and drama.

Each of these teachers was involved in a wide range of extra curricular activities which added to the richness of the educational experience in St. Marys. In addition they were very involved in the pastoral care of students

The whole school community is indebted to these teachers for their dedication and care to generations of our students. They will be missed by all in St. Mary’s and we hope that whole new horizons of opportunity, success and happiness open up for them.

Reminder – Parent Council AGM at 8p.m on Monday 12th September

Please attend this meeting and support the valuable work they do on your behalf

Meeting to elect Parent Nominations for BOM on Monday 12th September at 8p.m.

A new Board of Management will commence their three year term of office on 15th October 2005. In agreeing to their appointment to a B.O.M., a member of a Board is undertaking the valuable task of helping to shape and manage the voluntary secondary school entrusted to their care.

A special debt of gratitude is owed to all those who serve on Boards of Management. This work is done on a voluntary basis and while much of it is routine, nevertheless, it requires a commitment in terms of time and goodwill that is, perhaps, sometimes taken for granted. With the involvement of parents, teachers and trustee nominees, Board of Management represent a true example of local partnership in action.

We acknowledge the generosity of the outgoing B.O.M whose term of office terminates in October

The parents of children in the school elect two nominees for appointment to the Board. A general meeting of all parents will take place on Monday 12th September at 8p.m in the school during which nominations for election to the Board may be made. This will be followed by an election.

Leaving Certificate Results

Congratulations to all concerned with this years results. As always the results achieved by our students are excellent across all levels of ability. They are a great source of pride to the school and to our students and parents. To achieve good results requires dedication and hard work and a positive attitude towards school. the teaching staff of St. Marys set high standards and have high expectations of all students. When students, in turn set high standards for themselves and make an honest and sustained effort in their class work, homework and revision in co-operation with their teachers, top class results are always going to emerge at the end of each year. We are delighted to report that all year groups have made an excellent start to their studies. Let us all continue to work together to ensure each student achieves her potential.

Junior Certificate Results

These results are expected to arrive in schools on Wednesday 14th September. This will be confirmed in the media on the day before. There will be no classes on that day for students in 4th & 5th year. Students can collect their results in the Sports Hall Canteen from 10a.m – 12 noon.

School Mass

The annual school mass for the beginning of the new school year and celebrating Mercy Day will be held in the Sports Hall on Friday 23rd at 11.30a.m. Parents are most welcome to attend & join us to pray for a successful year ahead.

We wish all students and their parents and families a very rewarding and enjoyable school year ahead.

Meeting for Parents of 1st yr. Students

This will take place on Monday 10th October at 8 p.m and should last about an hour followed by refreshments.

Uniform

Sincere thanks to Parents for ensuring all students returned to school in correct uniform. Your continued support is appreciated very much.

The students have drawn very favourable comments for their uniform and appearance. We remind you that these uniforms are machine washable at low temperature- see label for details

As always, St. Mary’s has a proud tradition in providing comprehensive Pastoral Care. This is done through our Class Tutors, Year Heads , Chaplain and Guidance Counsellors

Summer Clean Up

The school has been cleaned from top to bottom over the summer months. Many hours of hard work have been put in by the care taking and cleaning staff of the school in making sure that the school is in the best possible condition for our students. We know that students and parents appreciate a clean and tidy school and we are asking everyone to make an extra special effort this year to keep the school in the fine condition that it is in now.

Chewing Gum is banned in the school and must not be brought into the school. Gum left lying around on floors and furniture leaves an awful mess and is very difficult and very unpleasant to remove. Students found with chewing gum will be asked to clean up the mess that chewing gum leaves around the school and will be subject to sanctions under the Code of Conduct.

Remember too that St. Mary’s is a Green School and we must continue to work hard to keep our Green School status. Please support our recovery and recycling programme. Our Green School crusade will be one of our top priorities as a school community for the year ahead.

School Refurbishment

During Registration Day many of you will have seen tremendous improvements throughout the school following a programme of renovation and redecoration over the summer. All of this work is possible only because of the generous support given to the school through the Family Contribution. Thanks to each of you for ensuring that St. Marys’ is a warm and comfortable learning /working environment for all our students and staff.

School Journal

Each student must have her journal in school with her every day. It is an essential means of communication between home and school. Any student who fails to have her journal in school with her must report to the Principal / Deputy Principal before 9 a.m.

The journal must be kept in a clean, neat and proper condition and it is to be used for official school purposes only. Journals that have been soiled, damaged, defaced or abused in anyway must be replaced at the cost of €10.

We ask Parents to indicate by their signature that they have checked their daughters’ journal each week. This will also ensure that journals are being kept in proper condition.

Student Absences

To comply with the Education Welfare Act, all absences from school must be explained in writing by parents on the day the student returns to the school. This is done by entering the details in the Explanations for Absence section in the Journal. The student must show this to her class tutor during her first tutor group class after she returns to school.

Conclusion

On behalf of the staff of St. Mary’s we thank you for your interest in our school. We look forward to working with you in the best interest of your daughter.

Please feel free to contact us if you feel we can be of help to you.

Yours sincerely

HALLOWEEN 2004     NEWSLETTER.

Student Awards

Through its awards a school draws attention to achievements and personal characteristics it values in students. In St. Mary's our philosophy of  education is grounded in the Christian values promoted by Catherine McCauley, the foundress of the Sisters of Mercy.  Our aim is to work in collaboration with students and their families to cultivate and nurture the talents that each girl is gifted with. We celebrate effort as well as achievement in all areas of the life of the school.

.  The introduction of a Merit System into our Code of Conduct emphasises the intrinsic value that each of our students possesses and we deliberately look for occasions to affirm and encourage all in our care.

The annual Student  Awards Ceremony is an occasion to draw particular attention to individual students who are a source of encouragement and inspiration to the whole school community. We congratulate these students and encourage them to continue to develop their talents and whenever possible, to show positive leadership to others. We invite all of our students to do their best in all areas of their lives and look forward to helping each girl in our care to achieve her potential.

Saturday Oct 9th UCC Open Day Trip

Thankfully the weather was with us on Saturday for the UCC Open Day which was again a great success. Students attended talks on many subject areas available in UCC and took the opportunity to chat with course leaders and current students. The feeling afterwards was that it was well worth the early start - even on a Saturday. The only disappointment of the day was that the 3pm Psychology talk didn't happen, but we have been in contact with UCC to try and arrange a speaker to come to S1. Mary's

Trip to Limerick College Open Day

On Tuesday Oct. 19th a group of students considering attending colleges in Limerick attended the Open Day of all 3 Colleges.

Welcome to European Students

We extend a warm welcome to Kate Kolec from Poland who has joined 1:4 and Milly Litvajova from Slovakia who has joined Transition year. Both girls are settling in well and receiving great support form their teachers and classmates. Already in St. Mary's for the last two years are Diana Berdila from Romania (5th year) and Brigita Tyscenko (3rd year) from Lithuania. We look forward to seeing more nationalities join our school community.

Equestrian Team Success At Show Jumping

Fourth out of twenty-five in an interschool show jumping competition - not bad for a first outing! Being the eight to jump, the girls were told t() go out and have fun but they had bigger and better plans. They knew what they could do and what their horses were capable of. The only thing they were afraid of was the fact the jumps were too small !

First to jump was Ann-Marie Finn on her pony Jasper, not a bother on her, our little first year, the youngest on the team. They cleared the first round in style.    Following Ann-Marie was Leeoni Kirwan on Foxtrot who produced another clear round, what else would you expect from this duo? The pressure was on, it was now Colette Hart's turn on Bobby, with experience on their side they easily went clear. Just to put the icing on the cake after getting three clear rounds Cara Grace went out on Realtine to put in a brilliant clear round.

Hopes were high as they entered the second arena for round two. The jumps a bit bigger, "all the better" the girls said. As in the first round, experience and brilliant riding shone through with clears from Ann-Marie, Leeoni and Cara. Colette was unfortunate to have a pole down. At the end of the two rounds St. Mary's team had seven clear rounds and with the best three scores being counted, we had an overall score of zero faults.

It was a tough decision to pick two to go against the clock in the jump off. Only five other teams qualified, so we were all thrilled that the girls had made it. It was up to Ann-Marie and Leeoni to fly the flag for St. Mary's. Drawn in second place Ann -Marie, fearless of the tight turns entered the arena like a professional on her speed merchant Jasper. Nobody could watch, but she came out all smiles with one of the only few clear rounds on this tricky course. A few riders on, it was Leeoni who entered the arena, cool, calm and confident. Unfortunately, a slight rub off a fence ended up with a pole on the ground and time penalties to add to already very good time.

With €2000 prize money in the kitty every second was vital. When all was said and dine the team achieved fourth place, which has entered the girls into St. Mary's history, as the first show jumping team to be placed at this standard of jumping. At the end of the day, the girls received a rosette, a medal and a cheque for €100. They very kindly donated their prize money to the school fund to help with the purchase of new riding jackets, numnahs, etc will give this fantastic team and several other to come, a boost in the right direction as they go out to represent our school at equestrian events.

Once again, congratulations to the team for a fantastic performance and here's to many more to come.

Mr. Damian McDonald was Chef D'Equipe.  Thanks to our reporter Kate Doyle 6th year.

Good Luck

We extend our best wishes to Mr. Sean Fogarty who has being seconded to the Dept. of Education to deliver the Junior Science in-service programme. We in turn welcome Ms. Olive Thompson to our staff.

Hospice Coffee Morning

Each year staff from Wexford County Hospital/The Hospital for Sick Children, Crumlin screen our Junior Students for this condition and this has now been completed. As some students forgot consent forms it is hoped that the nurse will be able to schedule a return visit.

Proposal for Foreign School Trips 2005 – 2006

Depending on numbers, the cost of this trip will be approximately €580-€600.

This trip will be open to the present Third and Fourth Years.

Green School – Renewable Energy Project

Well done to class 2:3 on their presentation at the Renewable Energy National Conference. The event was organised by Wexford Energy Management Agency. The class exhibit was awarded a prize donated by Sustainable Energy Ireland. From the Lego Educational range, the girls constructed a solar – powered car and wind turbine.

As St. Mary’s is a designated green school, the students researched the mechanisms behind various forms of renewable energy and then carried out case studies on their own areas and suggested suitable sources of Sustainable Renewable Energy taking all factors (culture, economy, tourism, planning and climate) into consideration. All sites were plotted onto a 3-D plan of the south east from Forth Mountain to Tory Hill and from the Saltees to Mount Leinster. The finished model and lego constructions are now on display and will become a teaching resource for future groups. Well done to all the girls concerned and a special word of thanks to Mrs. Eva Kelly for her enthusiasm and guidance.

Celtic Enterprise Competition:

Senior Category

Congratulations to all the 5th year girls who represented St. Mary’s in the Riverside Hotel, Enniscorthy on Thursday 11th March.  We extend our thanks to Mr. Liam Glasheen and Ms. Una Doyle Bank of Ireland, who helped select the fifth year representatives for the enterprise competition and advised them on their presentation.

Elaine Hart, Amy Moloney, Orla Deegan, Patricia Gaule and Marie Therese Nolan with their company ‘Juice it’ represented the school in the senior category. The girls were well prepared by their teacher Ms. Winters

Junior Category:

Six companies were selected to go forward to the finals of the Junior selection for first year students. The teams did themselves proud, coming away with a special award for merit. It was the first time that schools from New Ross were entered into this category.

The 1st yr. mini-companies, organised by Ms. Noelle Carroll, began last October when students started their own businesses. A market day was held in the school in the run up to Christmas, and was well supported by parents, staff and pupils.

In January, the teams began writing their business reports and on the basis of these, along with their businesses, were chosen to go forward to the county finals. On the day, students set up their stands and made a presentation to the judges. These were of a very high standard and the students were confident and well prepared.

The following students represented St. Mary’s:-

‘Stressheads’- Aoife Culleton, Laura Crowdle, Ciara Lyng

Young Scientists Exhibition

Two groups represented St. Mary’s in the recent Young Scientist exhibition held in Dublin. Marie Therese Nolan, Sharon Kehoe & Jenny Owens’s project was titled "Investigating the Pollution Levels in three South East Rivers – the Barrow, Nore & the Slaney"

They checked the pollution levels by measuring the presence of phosphates and nitrates in the three rivers, determining the B.O.D levels (Biological Oxyen Demand) and the Ph, and by also checking its turbity. After extensive research the students concluded that the Nore was the least polluted river.

A project on Ergonomics was presented by Elaine Hart, Maria Russell and Emma Cummins. This involved the study of the design of furniture and appliances to reflect the comfort, health and safety needs of its users. St. Mary’s school was chosen as the site for study, with the computer room selected as the case study. The project looked at ways of reducing physical stress and strain while working with computers. Six schools were surveyed to examine how ergonomically aware students were, and to determine whether pain and discomfort was experienced as a result of inappropriate seating, desk height, anti-glare screen, lighting, air-conditioning etc. Results were analysed and conclusions arrived at. Five of the six schools surveyed were not properly equipped. The school that was best equipped was built in the last two years and had everything the department of education specified.

A letter was written to the Minister of Education asking why all schools were not put on an equal footing in terms of access to appropriate grants etc.

The following Information Technology Co-Ordinators were most helpful in facilitating this project-

Mr Mick Duggan (Vocational College) Mr Billy McGrath (Good Counsel College), Mr Willie O’ Donoghue (CBS)

Ms Mary Pat Pilketon (Holy Faith) and Ms Mary Maugh (Abbeyside Community College, Ferrybank)

Teacher Ms. Anne-Marie Goulding gave willingly of her time to help with the projects.

Prohibition on Smoking in all Workplaces

The Minister for Education & Science has written to say that the law prohibiting smoking in all workplaces applies to schools. Management authorities are obliged to ensure that the regulations are fully complied with in schools. Enforcement of the ban will be carried out by Environmental Health Officers and by Inspectors of the Health and Safety Authority. Any students found smoking on school property will be reported to these Inspectors and the full rigors of the law will apply to them. The school has no discretion in this matter.

School Uniform

Sincere thanks to parents for ensuring that students come to school in correct uniform. Your continued support is appreciated very much. We also value the efforts made by students to be well groomed and in wearing their uniform with pride. Any student who arrives in school without proper  uniform will be provided with a  freshly laundered skirt and jumper so as to enable her to join class.

Mobile Phones

Where her parents can demonstrate that a student must have access to her mobile phone at the end of the school day in order to contact home, it must be:
powered off before accessing school property and locked away in the student's locker for the duration of the school day.

Students who access a mobile phone while in school will have the phone confiscated and it will be returned, upon request, at the end of the school day. Such students will be placed on the school demerit system.

Camera phones interfere with a person’s right to privacy and are therefore not allowed in school under any circumstances.

Conclusion

Our aim is to work closely with parents and students to ensure the best possible education for each girl entrusted into our care. We welcome and encourage regular contact between school and home and assure you of a helpful response when you talk to us.

We wish all staff, students and their families Gods Blessing and a very Happy Easter.

Friendship Week

St. Mary’s recently held its first ever, and very successful, "Friendship Week". The aim of the week was to celebrate friends and friendship: to think about our friends and our friendships; celebrate the good times and memories, and have a bit of fun while we were at it.

The hard work of the Art group was to be seen on every wall and door in the school as posters, poetry and other decorations, told their stories about friendships. The corridors were filled with laughter as a handshake or a ‘Smile on a Stick’ were exchanged, not to mention when the 1st and 2nd years were on the hunt for the clues to the treasure.

The Friends Quiz was so successful that it took 3 days to get through all the entries, instead of the one-day we expected. A special Friendship edition of the Transistion Year  Newspaper -  "The Open Door" was produced containing poetry written by students throughout the school, as well as other articles and features on Friendship.

Best of all were the wonderful stories of great friends told on the nomination forms for St. Mary’s "Friend of the Year 2003". Picking only 3 winners from all the nominations received was hard work.

The success of Friendship Week was because of the great work done by the organizing group who gave up their free time for weeks in advance, as well as during Friendship Week itself. It was such a success that we’re going to have another one next October – and it’s going to be even better.

Congratulations to all the people involved in organizing the week. They are:- Claire Barr, Alexis Bennett, Diana Berdila, Claire Bolger, Joanna Cahill, Rosie Cantlon, Siobhan Clifford, Ciara Cullen, Paul Deavy, Eva Duhig, Evelyn Furlong, Mary Ann Furlong, Oonagh Grace, Annmarie Goulding, Niamh Hanrahan, Dawn Keating, Mary McNamara, Ayshe Mevlit, Karen Murphy, Lisa Murphy,  Samantha Ryan, Shirley Walpole & Tanya Whelan

Arts Week:

Arts week is an event that allows students to appreciate the wider world of the arts and to hopefully find interests and hobbies and self-expression in some the many workshops and activities on offer.

The school is very mindful of the exceptional and special talents that can be found in all classrooms and it is hoped that this weeks events will help nurture these talents further.

Wide ranges of activities were offered throughout the week. The programme of events began on Tuesday when the whole school stopped classes for 40 minutes to read a favourite book in celebration of World Book Reading Day.

A feature of this weeks events is the active participation of students in a rich and varied programme, much enjoyed by all participants. The emphasis has been on fun and enjoyment with plenty hands-on opportunities for the girls to participate in the workshops.

These included local artist and past pupil Maeve Doherty displaying her beautiful watercolours. Bettina Meyler with a series of workshops on fabric painting, while Dawn Morley conducted a series of classes on glass painting, both of which were very well

received. Joe Meagher presented a variety of drama workshops, and Fr. Padraig Daly conducted a number of poetry workshops that were very warmly received.

One of the most eagerly awaited sessions was a hurling coaching opportunity with Kilkenny senior star Brian McEvoy. Dance enthusiasts were catered were catered for with Sean Higgins’ lively set dancing sessions while Anne Marie Cooney presented a dance workshop in a more contemporary vein, and budding writers were afforded the opportunity to work with Mark Roper. New Ross Drama Workshop also contributed to the creative atmosphere with their well- received presentation.

Other activities enjoyed over the course of the week included a series of French and German films organized by their respective departments. A music workshop and concert, along with 1st year debate, fashion show and play concluded the week’s activities.

This has been a tremendous week for the school. The girls really enjoyed the workshops and activities. Ms. Kathleen Woodcock, Arts Week Co-Ordinator, put a lot of time and energy into making this week such a great success.

bulletGoal setting
bulletTime management
bulletNote taking
bulletExam techniques

All agreed that the day was very good and hopefully should pave the way for plenty of good work for the last term from Easter to Summer. Good work done during the last term provided an excellent foundation for the ‘start-up’ in September. Many thanks to the Parents’ Council and Board of Management for their sponsorship of the day.

Electronic Attendance/Punctuality Checker system

The School recently gave a trial run to a new electronic attendance/punctuality checker. All 1st years were given special ‘swipe-in’ bar coded cards to use to register their attendance and punctuality to school each morning.  The system worked very well and provides the school with new possibilities for ensuring strict attendance and  punctuality to school for the future. At present the school is awaiting developments from the National Educational Welfare Board – a new body with responsibility for encouraging and supporting school attendance – before further introducing an electronic attendance/punctuality checker in the school.

Adult Education Adult Education classes have now finished. Deemed a great success by all concerned, new programmes for next September are currently being designed. More information later. Una Murphy, course co-ordinator

Christmas 2002 Newsletter

 EDUCATION ACT

The Education Welfare Act 2000 became law in July 2002.   This Act has major implications in respect of Attendance at school.   The Act clearly articulates the responsibilities of both school and home in respect of non-attendance.

“Parents are required to notify the school of the reasons for the child’s absence from school for part of a school day or for one or more school days”.

“Written notification of absences of 20 days or more in any one academic year will have to be sent to the Education Welfare Officer”.

As you are aware consistent school attendance is imperative and we ask you to support the school in this regard.   Attendance will be closely monitored in 2002-2003.

PARENTS’ COUNCIL

The school was delighted to receive a cheque for €4000    from the Parents’ Council at their AGM held last October.   This money will be used to further support the school library and also to expand the Book Rental Scheme.   Many thanks to all  the members of the Parents Council.

·
Each student should check that all their subjects for Leaving Cert are listed on the Exam Register.

Class Moneys

The School would like to sincerely thank all those who have looked after bills re class moneys, mock exams and the Parents’ Contribution.   It makes a huge difference to the administration of school accounts to have all such matters taken care of early in the school year.

The school will issue reminders to those who have as yet not taken care of bills early in the New Year as we hope to finalise all such accounts before the end of January 03.

Personal Property

The school would encourage all students to be very careful about personal property.   All valuables brought into the school should be securely locked away in lockers (and the locker key removed from the lock!).   Unfortunately  in this day and age there will always be those amongst us who will take advantage of someone’s carelessness re valuables.

The school will not be held responsible for articles lost or stolen or damaged.

Young Scientist + Technology Exhibition

2003 will be the first year that St. Mary’s Secondary School will be represented at the ESAT BT Young Scientist + Technology Exhibition, not just by one but by two projects.   Out of approximately 1000 entries, 480 were chosen to exhibit in the RDS January 2003.

Orla Deegan and Nessa Banville were successful in having their project “The dangers of undercooked red meat” accepted, as were Elaine Hart, Emma Cummins and Tara Bradley with their project “Looks –v- Personality”.

The Exhibition takes place from 8th – 11th January in the RDS, Dublin.   There are numerous events organised and it is sure the girls will have a wonderful time.

We wish them all the best in their quest to become the ESAT/BT Young Scientists of 2003.   Well done also to Ms Shanahan for her time and effort in preparing the girls.
