Visit to Millhouse Care
Centre 30-09-11
By Kirstin Patterson
On Friday Ms Tinnelly and Mrs Ford accompanied transition year students
participating in the Community Care module, along with other volunteers, to the
Millhouse Care Centre. Our visit coincided with ‘Positive Aging Week’ which ran
from the 23rd of September to the 31st of October, and we
intended to visit the residents and sing for them.
Upon arriving at the centre, we were shown to a communal room where we
gathered and began to sing. We sang folk songs ranging from ‘I’ll Tell me Ma’
to ‘The Fields of Athenry’. It was a great afternoon for all involved, and we
had very mixed reactions from the residents, some danced, some sang along, some
slept, and some cried tears of joy. But overall I think our visit was greatly
appreciated.
If you want to see the centre for yourself it is located a short walk from our
school in the peaceful woodland setting of the Ponds. It’s a purpose built 62
bed residential facility where a trained team of nurses and care assistants aim
to provide the highest standard of care for their residents. You can find more
information about the facility and its residents on the website.

Guest speaker
for Hope cancer support centre- 29-09-11
By Kirstin Patterson and Megan Laney
This week transition year students and Mrs. Ford’s 5th year LCVP
class attended a talk with Mary Bennett from the Hope cancer support centre in
Enniscorthy, and Anna Furlong founder of the Rapunzel project. This was in
relation to the 10km walk coming up on the 9th of October organised
by Anna Furlong.
Mary talked about the different services offered in the centre for those
effected by cancer e.g. Reflexology, yoga, wig fitting and counselling. She
also outlined the main symptoms of breast cancer, further details of this can
be found on the Hope centre website. Anna told us about her Rapunzel project;
she explained how her wig fitting sessions are confidential and done in her own
home. She also told us how we can grow and donate our own hair to be sent off
and made into wigs. There is no charge for the hair cut.
If you wish to participate in the walk contact Ms. Tinnelly for a sponsorship
card. All money raised will be donated to the Hope cancer support centre. Or
if you would like to contact Mary regarding any concerns or issues, see contact
details below, all discussions will be confidential.

TY Trip to
Glendalough Sept 2nd and 3rd
( by Caroline Furlong & Aoidin Kiely.)
As part of the bronze
medal Gaisce award all Transition year students went to Glendalough in Wicklow
which is most famous for St. Kevin. Not only as part of our award we also went
for a bonding experience. We left at half ten for our very exciting 2 hour bus
ride to Glendalough. When we got to Glendalough we settled into our rooms in
the Glendalough Lodge Youth Hostel where we split into groups of 10's, 8's and
6's. We then got to eat our lunch as we awaited for our hike to begin.
Firstly we visited the
tourist office where we watched a short film about St. Kevin and the history of
Glendalough. We were given a tour by a very enthusiastic tour guide, Darragh,.
He showed us the round tower and several other buildings and monuments.
Afterwards we started our 16km hike. Scary as it might seem it was actually
worthwhile because of the wonderful scenery of the valley, and the banter and
chats. We finished our 5 hours of walking by being teased by the 'Kevin's
Ice-cream Cones' and 'Kevin's Takeaway' stands as we headed back to the hostel.
We were told we had to fend for ourselves. Everyone crouched over the
microwaves with their reheatable pasta or rice for dinner. Before the day was
over each room was told a talent show was to be put on and that each room would
perform. Judged by Ms Woodcock, Ms Shannon, Ms Larkin and Mr. Fogarty each room
dressed up and danced or performed.
Next morning we were up
bright and early to finish our walk. We walked for 10km but thankfully it was
easier than the last day! We left Glendalough at 12 o'clock and stopped in
Arklow for a well deserved McDonalds.

Dragon Boat for River Festival

TY
students were straight into activity this year with the construction of this
18' Dragon on Thursday. Constructed on site in St Mary's the piece went from
bare wavin pipes and a boat to the magnificent dragon you see above in just 6
hours. Congratulations to all the TY students who contributed to the drama of
the River Festival on Sunday through their work.

European Day of
Languages Celebration
1st and 2nd year
students were treated to a taste of Europe this morning when TY filled Lantern
Hall with a display of the costumes, food and languages of some of our European
neighbours. We were welcomed in the door by the Guten Tag of Germany. Olives
from Greece, cheese and breads from France and the very popular chocolate from
Switzerland were enjoyed by all. We were honoured to have the Pope representing
Italy, Agneta from Abba representing Sweden and Monet paid a visit to the
France stand. We were taught to speak a little Czech, learned that Denmark was
the first country to ban pineapples while all the time enjoying the music of
Spain's Gypsy Kings. Holland's windmills, tulips and clogs and Lithuanian
traditional costumes added to the great colour of the event. Congratulations to
all the TY students who took part and made it such a colourful and fun occasion
for all your guests.

LOG ON LEARN
A new Transition Year Programme – Teaching Computer
Skills to Older People .
Transition Year students have recently begun organising this programme
in which they are the tutor to an older person from the community. The course
takes place in the school’s computer room and runs for 1 – 2 hours. The
Transition Year student-tutors provide one-to-one computer training, tailor
made to suit each individual’s existing skills, learning pace and interests.
Log on Learn was a huge success in St Mary's last year and we look forward to
the return of the successful programme this year.
